PTA Meeting Minutes
November 7, 2012
At 6:30 p.m. the meeting was called to order by PTA President Marc Campen.
Approval of September PTA Meeting Minutes
The first order of business addressed was the need to vote for approval of the November 2012 Meeting minutes. Marc Campen made a motion for the approval. Shows of hands indicated a unanimous consent, and minutes were approved.
Recap of Movie Night and Election Day Bake Sale
Marc Campen reported that the showing of “Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3” on November 2nd was a big success. The event went smoothly; students were well-behaved, and all seemed to enjoy themselves. The Election Day Bake Sale was also a success, with sales grossing over $400.
Sarah Karush – Gallows Road Signal Crossing
Sarah Karush gave a presentation on the history of the new crossing lights installed at Gallows Road/Aston Street in front of Woodburn ES. Pedestrians push a button to activate, and bright, highly visible beacons flash in a fast pattern for about 25 seconds to alert drivers.
The new beacons are mounted on both sides of the road, so drivers approaching from either direction see the flash. Because the beacons are manually triggered, they only flash when there is a pedestrian, which is an important feature—when drivers see the beacons flashing, they can be sure a pedestrian is nearby.
Sarah explained that originally the hope was for a Hawk Light to be installed, however it was determined through VDOT investigation that the intersection at Gallows/Aston did not have the adequate number of crossing pedestrians required to warrant such a light. Discussion continued, noting that it will take time for cars to become adjusted to coming to a full stop when the light is activated so that pedestrians can cross safely.
Treasurer’s Report – Janel Beach
The Woodburn PTA Audit Report has been completed and submitted to the Virginia PTA for approval.
A volunteer is needed to organize the Gingerbread House Activity on Friday, December 14th.
Adrienne Sullivan suggested a flower sale at the Woodburn Fine Arts Night on December 12th as a possible fundraiser for the PTA. This could be implemented in the spring, as well.
Marc Campen adjourned the meeting at 7:30 p.m.
