In celebration of Take Your Family to School Week, the Woodburn PTA and school leadership are hosting Raise a Reader!, an event focused on sharing the joy of reading.
Families are invited to attend a reading hour in their child’s classroom. Guest readers will read a story aloud to students, family members will have a chance to read with their children, teachers will raffle books in each classroom, and tips and reading resources will be available. Reading hours will take place at 10:00 and 12:00. See below for grade level times.
• 10:00 to 10:45 am – Grades 1, 3, 4, 5 • 12:00 to 12:45 pm – Grade K,2, 6
The PTA and Woodburn encourage families to read together at home and share photos on social media using the hashtags #woodburnreads and #raiseareader.
Spanish translation will be available on the day of the event and transportation between Woodburn and Fairmont Gardens will be provided.
The PTA is honored to have a received a $250 grant from the Fairfax County Council PTA (FCCPTA) Family Engagement Awards Committee to support this event!
We will share more information by Facebook, email, and here on our website.
As always, parent volunteers will help make this event a success. The day of the event we need a parent volunteer to help manage snacks for each classroom, as well as other tasks. If you are interested, please contact PTA Secretary Mary Cunningham: email@example.com
At this week’s PTA meeting, learn about FCPS’s new digital citizenship initiative and grade-specific lessons. Digital Citizenship is described as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use. Starting this year, each grade receives at least one lesson on a range of digital citizenship topics such as information literacy, privacy and security, and cyberbullying (see more at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-citizenship-internet-safety/what-digital-citizenship).
Come learn from Ms. Vinisky and Ms. Roberts what your kids will be learning this year.
Parents will also learn useful tips for internet safety at home.
Food will be provided at the meeting, donated by Matchbox Pizza.
Babysitting will be provided. Spanish translation available.
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! I am honored to serve as your PTA President alongside a dedicated PTA Executive Board, parent volunteers, wonderful teachers, and our new principal, Ms. Katy Richman. The PTA board has been busy this summer planning events and activities for the school year. Please visit the Woodburn PTA website to stay up to date on events, learn about the PTA, purchase Spiritwear, sign up for membership, and more. Our website will be our main hub for communication this year as well as the Wildcat Weekly on Thursdays.
As we begin the year, we ask for your support so that we can continue creating opportunities for students and staff. Your support helps purchase classroom supplies, provides field trips and assemblies, maintains our Changing Education Through the Arts (CETA) membership, and enables enrichment programs for all Woodburn students. Our goal is to bridge the gap between county funding and what our kids and educators need to thrive in school.
For our PTA to be effective, everyone’s participation is essential. There are numerous ways you can help—watch our website for volunteer activities or reach out to a member of our board to see how you can get involved. Volunteering will enable you to get to know our students, become friends with other parents, and accomplish things that make a difference. Research shows that students whose parents are involved in their education have better grades and fewer discipline problems. We promise that the time you give to the PTA and the school will be worthwhile—and fun! Please consider volunteering -it makes a difference in the lives of all our students.
On behalf of the entire PTA Executive Board, I would like to thank you in advance for your support. Have a wonderful school year, and know that we are happy that you are part of the Woodburn Community.
